South Side

It may be winter in the Northern Hemisphere, but in Sydney it’s the height of summer and that means bare legs, bustiers, and oversized sunglasses. Here’s what the ladies down under are wearing now. By Elle Packham. Photographed by Zac Handley

HENRI NGYREN, 20
SYDNEY

STYLE ICON: Mary-Kate Olsen
FAVOURITE SPOT IN THE CITY: I love Crown St. in Surry Hills with all the little vintage shops and cafes.
DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: Chilled rock-skater look
DREAM VACATION SPOT: Fiji Islands
INSIDER TIP FOR VISITORS: Bring a jacket—it gets cold!

VALENTINA SYKES, 16
SYDNEY, INNER WEST

STYLE ICONS: Charlotte Free and Rachel Rutt
FAVOURITE SPOT IN THE CITY: Centennial Park—I like being surrounded by nature.
BEST PLACE TO MEET PEOPLE: Newtown. Lots of my friends live there so I’m always meeting new people through mutual friends. Everyone kind of knows each other there.
DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE: It’s girly, colourful dresses or singlets mixed with my boyfriend’s Nike jackets and shoes. Sometimes I love clothes that are almost ugly. Ninety-nine percent of my clothes are from op [charity] shops, and I like to wear lots of small silver rings. I only wear two pairs of shoes: my boyfriend’s Nikes and my black combat boots—both found in op shops!
FAVOURITE SECONDHAND-STORE FIND: It has to be my combat boots, which cost me $5. I pretty much live in them!

PERRI ROACH, 15
COOGEE, SYDNEY

STYLE ICON: I’m a huge fan of teen blogger Tavi Gevinson.
FAVOURITE SPOT IN THE CITY: Pretty much anywhere in Newtown. It’s so funky and I’ve yet to find a shop there I don’t like.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?: I wear a lot of vintage, mostly from the '60s and '70s. My wardrobe is really colourful; I hardly have any practical clothes.
FAVOURITE SONG: I’ve been loving “Bel Air” by Lana Del Rey lately.
INSIDER TIP FOR VISITORS: Make sure to check out Sculptures By The Sea—it’s rad.

STYLE ICON: Frieda Kahlo
FAVOURITE SPOT IN THE CITY: Freda’s—it has great food.

SHANNON THOMAS, 25

STYLE ICON: I love Diane Kruger.
FAVOURITE SPOT IN THE CITY: Tamarama on a quiet day, or somewhere secret, quiet, and in the sunshine, near the water.
INSIDER TIP FOR VISITORS: Avoid the city—go to side streets, beaches, and places you hear about from word of mouth.
