There's a reason why so many people love U-Tern. One of Vancouver's finest DJs, he has a genius little knack for creating specific moods with music.  It's something he demonstrates regularly on One Day Later, his show on Brooklyn Radio. When tasked with making Aritzia a custom mix U-Tern created the mood of being "More Than Friends".  Um..is anyone else swooning???

Hail Mary J.

Sure, she sounds impeccable on her new album.  And sure, she looked hot in The One video... but this clip of Mary J Blige LIVE on Letterman is proof she's STILL GOT IT!  No edits or special effects.  Just Real.

Head to toe ridiculously, effortlessly gorgeous.   Every note, painfully, beautifully perfect.

Just in time for the 2010 Games, Rory Them Finest has mixed us an Olympically spirited set to listen to while we get pumped about the 2010 Games in Vancouver starting tomorrow! The set is definitely one you could speed skate to!  And if you're more inclined to sit back and watch the pros do their sport,  well, you may consider blasting this anyway.

"What are the Winter Olympics if not a celebration of extraordinary speed and aerodynamics? That provided the inspiration for the anthems at the start of this mix -- energetic and full throttle.  Culturally, the Olympics represent a united experience through diversity. I wanted an eclectic yet harmonious feel to this, showcasing music pillars from electronic to dancelfoor rock to disco to grimey rap to dark R&B."

You may recall a professed girl crush on Rachel Ballinger? My new object of crush is Alicat (above) since she modeled for Aritzia in December.  The homegrown cutie from Toronto, lives in London where her main gig is rocking out on the regular as the front girl for her band.   Featured in Elle UK’s December Music Special, Alicat described her style: “I like to invent little characters depending on how I feel.  Today I wanted to look like I’d just come from a goth ballet class.  Everything inspires me, from fashion to paintings, but mostly women I see in the street who prove that shopping on a budget can force you to be creative to fantastic effect.”

Rad. I asked Alicat a few questions of my own.

What’s the name of your band and what kind of music do you play?
I sing in a band called Ghostcat.  We make a big pop racket.

What are you listening to these days?
Funny enough, only fellow females at the moment…still rocking Gagas ‘The Fame Monster’, loads.  Downloaded Amanda Blank’s 'I Love you' and Ke$ha’s ‘Animal’.

Words to live by?
I constantly tell myself that “fortune favours the brave”, but consistently adhering to it is another thing altogether!  I’ve been known to wuss out but I’m working on it.

Who's your girl crush?
Currently? It's gotta be Megan Fox.  Foxy by name, foxy by nature.  Have you seen ‘Jennifer’s Body’? Yikes.  Even my mom was like, “Who is this Megan Fox, I hear she’s really sexy?”  I would cause some serious evil in this world if I could look like that girl for one day.  I know it’s not the most cerebral pick but I don’t care.  Girlfriend is fine.

I heard you picked up some gear from the Aritzia shoot.  What did you get?
I loved the Talula bandage skirt from the fall collection and had to pick one up for myself.   I also picked up a pair of Acne hex jeans in washed black.  I really want one of those CANADA Olympic tank tops I just saw on the Aritzia blog…do you guys do mail order?!

Above clockwise from top left: 1) the contents of Alicat's purse 2) Alicat modeling for Aritzia wearing a Wilfred Knit Skirt, Parklife Aboriginal Print Longsleeve tee, and a Wilfred Intarsia knit sweater 2) Acne Hex jeans Alicat bought at Aritzia, 4) Talula Bandage skirt Alicat bought at Aritzia

Ghostcat's new single 'Everybody On The Dancefloor' is set for release this spring.  In the meantime check out her moves in the 'This Is A Bust' video.

I'm still seeing Gothic and Horror visuals going on strong... in movies, fashion photography, you name it. Here's some gothic music videos to get spooked to!

Timbaland's "Morning After Dark" feat. So Shy and Nelly Furtado: Bring out your inner Buffy/Bella/Sookie {insert your favorite vampire-loving hottie}.  We can't help but giggle at Timbaland's "possessed eyes" rolling around in his head!

The Cure's "Lullaby": A nightmare? An addiction?  Whatever it's about, Lullaby is a gothic classic.

Yea Yea Yeas and Fever Ray video collabo "Skeletons": Beautiful vocals.  Stunning ghosts and shadows to match.  Wow.

We have a heart on for DJ Jaime Sin (who is also, P.S, a Jewellery Designer, Artist and Style / Design Culture blogger).  We're pretty much gushing to share the playlist she made us!

"Imaginary Summer features lots of upbeat, dreamy, happy music to keep you warm...like a tropical getaway with your best girl friends in the middle of January. The mix features many songs that have featured prominently in my dj sets within the past year".

Enjoy Ladies!

The 2010 Olympic calendar may be chockfull of athletic events but that doesn't mean you won't have the chance to get your groove on.  The official events schedule has been released and some fortunate folk in the Vancouver and Whistler area will get the chance to take in the musical stylings of artistes such as Feist, Estelle, and The Roots, who, as the house band of the Jimmy Fallon show, are thankfully not caught up in the whole late-night tv debacle raging now (you know what we're talking about).  We'd be sad if the Olympics was the last time in a while we'd be able to get our fix of them.  For the full schedule and complete list of acts, go here.

When Rico Uno's not rocking one party or another around Vancouver, he's making sick mixes for the likes of Livestock, Rockers NYC, Brooklynradio.net, and well...Aritzia. Rico Uno is one quarter of Vancouver's notorious DJ crew The Freshest. For this mix, Rico Uno took inspiration from his killer popcorn maker to make a post modern whirlwind of songs. While we're pumped it's the New Year (2010 yeah!), we'll admit we're putting our faith in this hot mix to get us through a cold month!

Your Boy Brian is a Toronto DJ. He puts us onto fantastic new music to listen to and he has a serious skill for heating up a room full of people with his stealthily climbing beat selection.  For instance, he just played our Toronto holiday staff night out and, *boy, did he rock the party ;) Your Boy Brian has several residencies around Toronto, and throws the More Proof monthies. www.yourboybrian.com

For the holidays he mixed us a playlist of gems with the occasional drops of holiday cheer.  Stream it or download it in our music player
