Aritzia Loves: art and design

JANUARY 27, 2011 By: cancansoo

Our super talented visual display designer Ben (he's also our resident office ukulele serenader) is having his first solo show at the Honfleur Gallery in Washington D.C. from March 4th - April 8th and we couldn't be more proud.  In case you didn't know, he's the creative force behind some of our most famous window displays (the uber-popular flying cats, the space reindeers and the holiday puffins), so we're not surprised others have taken notice of his talent.

Titled "TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS AS PAINFUL AS IT SEEMS", his show is curated by art blogger The Jealous Curator and anyone who's in D.C. at that time should definitely check it out!  Maybe you'll be lucky enough to get your hands on one of his pieces.

We had a chat with Ben to find out what he had to say about his upcoming show.

"My goal is to create a body of work that instigates reflection and dialogue, while maintaining my own artistic voice," he says.  "Text is an essential part of my art practice."  For this show, he's used materials such as back painted plexiglass, aluminum panels, inlaid wood veneer, glitter, sprinkles, watercolour and gold leaf text on glass for his phrases.  The show also doesn't stay within the confines of the gallery space. "Spending time in the community and the gallery is an important aspect of the exhibition. The final work in this exhibition is vinyl text, which will expand beyond the gallery and be applied, guerilla-style, to abandoned storefronts.  It's about taking art outside into the real world."

My Girl Crush this month isn't exactly a NEW crush but given all the gossip surrounding her mother, editor of French Vogue Carine Roitfeld (for getting blacklisted from the Balenciaga show!), it seems fitting to focus on a prettier truth about the fashion heiress...

Is Julia Restoin-Roitfeld beautiful or what!

Julia Restoin-Roitfeld graduated from Parsons Fashion School in New York, works as an Art Director and enjoys front row at all the top fashion shows in New York and Paris each season.

Her sense of style is most visible in her killer outfits which makes her a recurring subject of style photography, but Todd Selby's feature on her New York City apartment last year, shed light on her home aesthetic;  "clean, pure, minimalist".

To say that Julia's beautiful lifestyle, clothes, and New York apartment are inspiring might be a bit of an understatement.  So after perusing Julia Restoin-Roitfeld photos, here's a few JRR-inspired pieces we could all add to our wardrobes:

We came across this shot from photographer Candace Meyer's personal collection and we're rather captivated by how perfectly the dress from our new luxe line, Little Moon by Wilfred, compliments the ethereal mood of the image.  We think it's a match made in heaven.

Little Moon by Wilfred is available now at select Aritzia locations.

'Twas a night of dance, song and laughter through the old church halls of The Chapel on the eastside. Its purpose - to celebrate a new wave of emerging talent from Vancouver's art scene. The ongoing events of HERE IS NOW showcase a series of "pop up" exhibitions, exploring the relationship of time and space in an unconventional environment. Basically, a good way to check out some awesome work, in a beautiful space - oh, did we mention drinks, dancing and music until after midnight? Check out http://hereisnow.ca for more upcoming shows.

We're always proud when one of our own gets recognised elsewhere.  Ben - an über-talented member of our creative team - has recently had a series of his work featured on the Portland-based web magazine, BEEFMASTER.  Take a peek at his collection, entitled "Grandpa Wants the Tambourine", at www.beefmastermagazine.com.  Way to go Ben!

This month our support office space was featured in Azure - a leading design, architecture, and art magazine. We were completely flattered to see they had taken note of our beautiful space, and to be honest it kind of reminded us how lucky we are to call such a beautiful place "work"!

Some of the best parts of the space are that we're surrounded by sleek designer furniture, hand painted wall murals, a selection of framed art by our favorite photographers (you've seen their work on our bags) and well, lots of gorgeous clothing... every young woman's dream come true ;)

Cari Wayman is our featured artist for Spring 2009. You probably don't recognize her name ... Until recently, we didn't even know what her real name was; she was known to us only as "yyellowbird," the young and talented Flickr user we stumbled upon last year.

Cari isn't your average photographer, in fact, she doesn't even consider herself to be a "photographer" - instead she says that she "takes pictures". And though this may be an accurate statement, we think Cari is being very humble: her pictures have caught the attention of visual scavengers worldwide and have since been popping up all over the internet - posted on blogs, being flagged on ffffound, and favorited on Flickr.

We are very excited to be the first to take Cari's work out of the virtual world by working with her as our Spring 09 featured artist.

Look-out for more about Cari in the coming weeks!
Check our Cari’s Flickr page.

We have been really excited about these beautiful drawings of colourful geometry by Emma Kunz. I'm sure you'll notice a bit of this Swiss artist's influence in the coming months!
