ARITZIA LOVES

A Magic Cat Tail

OCTOBER 13, 2010 By: cancansoo

There's a story behind the Aritzia flying cats - a "tail", so to speak ...

In a secret crystal cave tucked away in a place no one knows to look, there lives a gang of cats. These flying felines are all descendants of one cat that was born with beautiful but, sadly, ineffective wings. However, as current lore has it, while out hunting one day it cornered a woodland fairy who, in exchange for her life, cast a spell on the cat and gave it the gift of flight.  From then on, this remarkable ability to fly was passed on to all its future generations.  For their own protection, because these rare, winged creatures have been pursued by people near and far who want to capture one for themselves, they've been forced to retreat into hiding. They sustain their powers using the magic crystals in their cave, so they rarely wander far.

That is, until now ...

Usually a hard-nosed and unemotional Brit - I was passing through Vancouver on business at the start of November (I am a paediatrician and was presenting at the American College of Chest Physicians). I saw the flying cats and was enchanted. I took lots and lots of pictures. My wife (42) and daughters (12 and 13) loved them. Well done on an enchanting design and concept. If you ever go into commercial production I am sure they will be a hit. And I will be in the queue for a cat if they become available in the UK. Incidentally, the kids at our hospital would LOVE these - and the fact that they fly is perfect for children who are in traction. We frequently have soft toys suspended above the kids (out of reach) but these are really special. I might try and get my artistically talented eldest daughter to make one! Hey, Will the puffins be up for sale in Canada and where do the proceeds go? Additionally will there be a line-up pre-opening for the bird statues? Thanks.

I lined up outside the TD Centre location downtown Calgary at 7:15. I was 4th in line. Two people in front of me wanted to buy two cats each. I'm glad I grabbed mine and paid and got out before any drama started as there seemed to be some confusion among the staff as to what the policy was. I do think, in the future, it's best to be very clear to those ppl who wish to order your window display items. I think one per person, is the fairest, considering there are only 12 or so per store to give away. I am hanging my magic cat above my bed. It's absolutely adorable. Thank you for the chance to purchase.

Flyyying magic cats! Dancing magic cats! Magi magi magi cats!!!!

Thank you so much for making these "Magic Cats" available to the cat lovers of Newmarket, Ontario. My granddaughter was over the moon when I gave it to her this afternoon. She gave us her money to purchase it which gave us the opportunity to buy another one. Your staff allowed 3 people in the store at a time, which I felt was the right thing to do. They were courteous and friendly. Merry Christmas and continued success!

Does anyone have an extra magic cat they would be interested in selling?!

November 23, 2010 @ 2:03 PM: Sam

There were 15 cats at the Rideau Centre Aritzia store and the first 6 customers took all of them. The first customer arrived at 6:30. The store manager did not want to make a decision on 1 cat per customer nor bother to inform people further back in line that people could purchase multiple cats nor, more seriously, bother to inform Rideau Centre Security that people would be lined up to purchase cats. Her organizational skills left a lot to be desired. Security came by curious about the line 15 minutes before the store opened then once they had talked to the manager, they came back to the store and stood inside as the line formed and had to ask one person further back in line to leave the store once everyone was in as this person swore at the manager--so they were needed! The manager refused to go with the one cat per customer request. I am impressed that other store managers said one cat per customer as I think this is fair and prevents the cats from going on EBay/Kijiji for an inflated price. From comments behind me (and I missed out too) people will be writing in to complain and likely not shopping at that store. Kudos to the people who will actually be giving them to other people as opposed to selling them. And yes, they would have made a fantastic fundraiser for the SPCA but maybe Aritzia is legally prevented from doing this. The purple puffins are not that great. I do wish the cats could have stayed up for the Festive Season.

November 23, 2010 @ 2:18 PM: cancansoo

We did not limit the sales to one per customer because honestly we didn't realize they were going to be so popular and that people would buy so many!  We knew some people might want more than one, which is why we didn't implement the one per person policy.

These cats were meant as a window display item only and we made them available for sale after our customers asked us to.  We sold them at cost price - not for profit.

I love my new flying cat but was very disappointed that the staff were allowing people to buy two and more cats considering the huge line at my store (more than 40 people in line and 20 available). I also had been told there were no presales yet a lady in my line had 4 cats waiting out back for her. This is a pretty poor policy if you want customer loyalty. I love to shop at Aritzia but this has left a bad taste in my mouth. Sad considering it could have been used as a loyalty building exercise.

November 23, 2010 @ 1:51 PM: cancansoo

Could you let us know at feedback@aritzia.com which store you went to?  There were no presales and our staff were not allowed to put any on hold for themselves or for others.  We'd like to be able to look into that.

November 23, 2010 @ 2:07 PM: Anonymous

Hi there, Thank you for your response! I went to the Vancouver, Robson Street store. I actually complained to the staff member serving me when the lady with the presale came up with her receipt for four cats- and I was told it had been authorized by the manager of the store (a mans name, don't recall). I had also been told earlier in the week that there would be 40 cats at this store, yet when the doors opened only 20 were available- so assume there might have been several presales? I would have loved to buy another, but felt badly for the people in line behind me- is there any possibility Aritzia might do another run considering the huge response? Alternately I would love to know the manufacturer so I could order another. I love the quirky whimsical nature of Aritzia marketing and am grateful to have this pretty cat for my daughter's nursery- Thank you :)

I just purchased a magic cat at Southgate in Edmonton, the black and white one...how cute...I was there at 7:00AM when the mall opened and still I was 2nd in line. Having said this, I had gone early with the intention of purchasing two, one each for my parents. About half an hour before the store opened, the manager of store advised everyone that they had 6 cats, and only one per person... Anyways, it was awfully nice of you to offer these for sale, will you be so kind to offer up where these cats can be purchased. I need one more for my other parent. Thank you so much.

THANK YOU! Waited for an hour and your LOVELY staff (very courteous & considerate) were prepared and dealt with all us, crazy peeps infected by the charms of the Aritzia Magic-Cats. There were too many of us interested but I and a kind gent entertained each other with stories of what we would do with them - he for his daughter, me for my nieces. A young boy wanted one and his mom took him from skool (he's returning next month for the special purple puffin!) and another gent just wanted a black one 'cuz it was cool'. I had to give one up since they were also so enamored. We were chatting that these could also be sold/auctioned for charity. (Had I been able to buy more, I would have done so, but I admit that I fell in love with these and will be gifting them from Aunt Kitty.) You did a great job in this campaign and thank you so much for being so helpful in announcing the sale & addressing all of us so well. The sale was a great idea! Am looking forward to more opportunities but most definitely impressed with the store and your policies more than ever. Many many thanks and best wishes for a wonderful holly-day season! (wearing my beautiful silk tunic as I type!) Kitty ps~re the US complaint: all I can say is, (with all due respect as I am American) half their stores won't ship to canada and their wares are far cheaper than ours due to duty & transport costs. Thank you again for considering Canadians in this campaign!

I just waited in line for 2 hours at your Southcentre Calgary store prior to the store opening to get one of the stuffed cats that were in your window display, I was 4th in line and the lady at the front of the line was allowed to buy all the cats that the store had. There should have been a limit of one per customer. Each person in line would have been able to buy one. This makes me very upset - I just wanted one for a babys room, and feel that Aritzia dropped the ball on this - you could have made several customers happy and instead made one happy and infuriated several others. Can you at least provide the name of the manufacturer of the cats so I can attempt to order one direct?

November 23, 2010 @ 11:23 AM: Anonymous

I bought my beautiful flying cat today! Thank you so much for selling them so fairly. We were in line for an hour before the store opened and there was even an Aritzia employee inline with us. One cat per person and everything was so orderly. Thank you!

November 23, 2010 @ 11:03 AM: Ashley

Ha I got 1

November 23, 2010 @ 10:24 AM: Anonymous

No pre-paid pickups? I'm pretty sure my friend just went to buy one and the girl working cash set aside two for her friends to get later on in the day.

November 23, 2010 @ 12:31 PM: cancansoo

The sale was meant to be on a first come, first serve basis - even our staff weren't allowed to put any on hold for themselves or their friends.  Please email us at feedback@aritzia.com with the store location you went to, so we can follow up with them over this.

November 23, 2010 @ 9:24 AM: Anonymous

I don't understand why there is a limit when it states that it's a first come first serve basis. Also, the site did not mention any limitations. My friend is in line at one of the locations and the store is now stating that you can only buy one. I don't think this fair if you've lined up fair and square to purchase more than one but you can't anymore.

November 19, 2010 @ 1:23 AM: Anonymous

How can I get one? BUT, I live in Washington state ~ yes, the dreaded USA. Must this be a barrier!?!?!?!?

November 22, 2010 @ 12:06 PM: cancansoo

As much as we'd have love to sell the cats to our US customers, there are legality issues that prevent us from doing so.  It's out of our hands - sorry!

November 16, 2010 @ 1:40 PM: Anonymous

I am definitely going to be in line on Tuesday AM to buy a few of these special Cats - Purrfect Gifts! (Just hoping the staff haven't claimed them all!) I was hoping to purchase the backdrops as well. From these pics there are at least three. Can you advise on prices? Many thanks. I laff when I walk into vendors and have their store look exactly the way I wish my home did! Great Designers! Best, Kitty

November 16, 2010 @ 3:37 PM: cancansoo

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you that you'll get the number of cats that you want!  The backdrops, however, aren't for sale - sorry!

November 11, 2010 @ 9:05 PM: Anonymous

can you buy these at ANY aritzia store??

November 12, 2010 @ 12:13 PM: cancansoo

They will be for sale at all of our Canadian locations (not US - sorry!).

November 21, 2010 @ 2:51 PM: Anonymous

Why not in the US? Not even one Kitty for a loyal Chicago customer? So Sad.

November 10, 2010 @ 5:18 PM: Anonymous

I will miss my class that morning to come buy one for my friend as a Christmas gift. I'm sure it'll be the best present she's ever had. They're so adorable!!!

OMG. I so want one of these magic cats. I saw them in Chinook Centre (in Calgary) on the weekend and got so stoked I took a photo. And then wrote a blog post! Check out my blog post here. http://detailmanagement.wordpress.com/2010/10/18/magic-cats/ And then if you know how I can get a hold of a magic cat, let me know!

October 18, 2010 @ 12:10 AM: Anonymous

In the 4th picture with the three mannequins, which brand is the grey sweater (the one with the purple scarf) from? I wasn't able to find it in the sweaters section on the website. Is it available in any of the Aritzia stores?

October 17, 2010 @ 1:26 AM: Anonymous

I want one! Please start selling them!!!

October 16, 2010 @ 2:54 AM: Hailey

I really want to buy one of those cats! Where can I buy one?

October 15, 2010 @ 11:34 PM: Judith Lewis

I saw the flying cats at the Rideau Center store the other day. I was there to buy a specific item, a maroon coloured lace cami. I asked my store helper if I could have one, and she didn't know, so I thought I would ask ! I was going to write a letter, when I received your email. So - what do you say? Are you going to give them away at some point? Would you have a draw or a contest? Judith in Ottawa

October 15, 2010 @ 10:57 PM: Esther
